Colorado’s Climate – Nearly Perfect
First of all, forget those media images of Colorado as cold and snow-bound! Colorado’s climate comes about as close to perfect as anyplace can claim. Most of the snow falls in the mountains, where it creates some of the best skiing in the world. But metro Denver and the rest of the Front Range are surprisingly snow-free most of the winter. When a major storm does occur, it is generally short-lived and the snow melts quickly. Cold snaps can be severe once or twice every several years, but are usually brief.
March is the snowiest month in Denver, followed by April and November. The deep-winter months of January and February are usually quite mild. In fact, a study of Denver’s weather on Super Bowl Sunday, going back to the 1970’s, concluded that in most cases, the game could have been played in Mile High Stadium under very pleasant conditions. Maximum Sunshine Denver is a very sunny place. In fact, residents are treated to more sunshine each year than either Miami or San Diego, yet 90-degree temperatures are reached, on average, only 33 days a year. And the temperature surpasses 100 in only one year in five. Add the low humidity and conditions are excellent for a wide range of outdoor activities.
With a sunny, semi-arid climate at middle latitudes, the Denver area enjoys an overall mild climate with minimal humidity. Summers are glorious with temperatures generally in the 80s or 90s, but low humidity levels that make it feel much more comfortable. Evenings and nights are extremely comfortable from May through October. Cooler temperatures can be found in the high country. With the mountains just to the west, winds are generally reduced. Summers are often characterized by late-afternoon showers or thunderstorms that pass through within several hours, cooling the land for the evening. Prevailing winds carry most storm systems from the Pacific and wring the moisture out of them over the mountains before they cross the Denver area, again contributing to the dry, comfortable conditions.
